Tips for, and help with, reading The Iliad?

I just bought a copy of the Iliad (the Fagles translation) for my summer reading ignment. It looks pretty intimidating with about 500 pages of confusing lines. Do you have any tips on how to read it quickl and understand it? Also, i looked at some of my friends' copies and theirs dont look as long as mine, are their shorter versions or something?
