Should America swear off over-indulgent wealth and avarice?

We all know that the poor in this country have it better than most anywhere else, but come to think of it there are some people paying $500 for hand cream. We all know the rest of the world hates us, but are we making ourselves a target with our gluttonous appetites for all kinds of shiny things and such?
